About John Erickson

Edit 1A product of Penn State’s doctoral program in Counseling Psychology, John has been licensed and practicing as a psychologist for more than 20 years. His experience includes almost 19 years with the Meadows Psychiatric Center, an inpatient psychiatric facility located outside State College, Pennsylvania which also maintains outpatient clinics and programs. John’s responsibilities there included individual, family and group psychotherapy treatment as well as psychological testing evaluations. His work at the Meadows also involved training and clinical supervision of staff, which included other licensed psychologists and mental health professionals. John held administrative positions at the Meadows that included Director of Clinical Services, as well as Director of Psychology.

John was an Adjunct Assistant Professor of Counseling Psychology at Penn State University. He was extensively involved with clinical supervision of doctoral students at all levels of training, including advanced practicums, pre-doctoral internships and post-doctoral internships. John has also been involved with training and clinical supervision of masters-level students that include clinical social workers and professional counselors.

Over nearly 20 years, John maintained a private practice associated with Sunpointe Health (formerly Center for Mental Health), but went on to establish his own solo practice. Considered a “generalist,” John works primarily with adults (and some older adolescents) seeking help with anxiety, depression, life stressors, relationship problems, loss, self-esteem and chronic mental health concerns.

A member of the American Psychological Association and the Pennsylvania Psychological Association, John has also been active as a board member and past-President of the local Central Pennsylvania Psychlogical Assocaition.

John grew up in the Mid-West, and completed a bachelor degree from Saint Olaf College in Northfield, Minnesota. He came to the East Coast after he was commissioned as an officer in the U.S. Coast Guard and was stationed in Philadelphia. He went on to achieve the rank of Lieutenant Commander and was a Reserve Unit Commanding Officer, which he did while completing a Masters in Social Work degree from Bryn Mawr College. John practiced for a short time as a Licenced Clinical Social Worker before completing his doctorate in Counseling Psychology.

Blessed with wonderful family and friends, John’s interests include flower and vegetable gardening (which he does largely with a community of close friends), as well as swimming, cycling, hiking, photography and reading.
